Key Steps

Site Preparation
Marsh Management prepared extensive shoreline sections along the waterfront, coordinating work around tidal shifts and planning access beside long, exposed edges facing New York Harbor.
Anchoring System
Crews established upper and lower anchor rows along the shoreline, securing each run to withstand tidal movement, wind-driven waves, and the unique demands of Liberty National’s coastal setting.
Assembly and Fill
The team installed, stretched, and tethered the 12 FT SOX system across the 1,700 FT section, using sustainable fill to rebuild eroded banks and reinforce long linear segments efficiently.
Aesthetic Finish
After shaping and smoothing the restored edges, the finished shoreline blended naturally with the surrounding turf and native areas, maintaining the clean presentation expected at a championship-level venue.
Problem
Liberty National Golf Club manages miles of open shoreline in an environment exposed to tides, wind, and coastal erosion. Several sections of the waterfront had begun to recede and lose stability, impacting both the structural integrity of the embankments and the overall playability and appearance of the adjacent golf holes. This championship-level course, positioned directly on the harbor, faced significant erosion pressures due to tides, wind, and coastal conditions.
Given the course’s visibility, set directly across from the Statue of Liberty and the New York City skyline, the club needed a shoreline solution that would deliver long-term stability while maintaining the pristine aesthetic standard Liberty National is known for.

Solution
Marsh Management began the shoreline restoration in Fall 2023, completing the first 1,700 linear feet along one of the club’s most exposed waterfront segments. The strong performance of this initial phase led Liberty National to expand the project into a second phase, covering an additional 7,000 feet now underway.
Using the 12 FT ShoreSOX system as the stabilization method, the crew rebuilt the failing banks, reinforced the shoreline against tidal conditions, and established a durable foundation for turf and ongoing maintenance. This approach was selected for its ability to stabilize soil, support vegetation, and provide long-term durability along a high-exposure coastal edge.
Outcome
The restored shoreline now provides a stable, clean, and visually seamless edge that enhances both the playability and the aesthetics of the surrounding golf holes. The work completed by Heritage Links delivered immediate structural improvement while preserving Liberty National’s signature look across its coastal holes.
As the ongoing second phase continues, Liberty National is positioned to implement a consistent, long-term shoreline strategy across its property. Marsh Management’s leadership and installation capabilities have made the club a standout example of large-scale shoreline restoration in the Northeast.
